TRANSPOP RESEARCH PROJECT”

The ERC project TRANSPOP (ERC Consolidator Grant No. 648429) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher and a research assistant position.

The TRANSPOP Project (The Transformation of Popular Politics in Europe’s Long Nineteenth Century) is a multidisciplinary research project that studies popular politics and social movements in the long nineteenth century from a transnational European perspective and seeks to shed new light on the processes the led to the emergence of the typical forms of political participation in the modern world. The project’s Principal Investigator is Peter Stamatov of the Carlos III-Juan March Institute for the Social Sciences at the Carlos III University in the municipality of Getafe in Madrid, Spain. The Institute promotes high quality research in the social sciences.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher and a research assistant with a background in the social sciences (sociology or political science) or history and with experience in comparative historical sociology or nineteenth-century social or political history. Candidates with experience in digital humanities are especially welcome in both positions.

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct publishable independent research on topics within the scope of the project.

Candidates whose research has crossed disciplinary boundaries and those who have done qualitative or quantitative work with primary sources are especially encouraged to apply. Because of the transnational focus of the project, the command of an European language (e.g., Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Dutch) is a basic requirement in addition to a demonstrable competence in academic English. Applications from candidates with proficiency in French or Italian are especially welcome.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT

The research assistant will contribute to the implementation of the research and provide administrative support for the PI. Research-related tasks include support for the research design, data acquisition, processing, and analysis, and the preparation of publications. In addition, the research assistant will provide administrative support for the preparation for progress reports, the management of the databases, the project’s lecture series, and the dissemination of the project’s output, including the project’s website.

We are looking, therefore, for candidates with previous experience in qualitative or quantitative research and ability to provide administrative support. Proficiency in R and Python is particularly desirable. Working knowledge of Spanish (and possibly another European language) is required, as well as demonstrable competence in academic English.

Term of Employment The initial term of employment is one year with the possibility of extension until July 2020. Both researchers will form part of the TRANSPOP project team that meets weekly to discuss progress and develop new research ideas.
